Shelley Carlisle was featured in Issue 3 with "WTF", and she returns with "Crazy Train", an ode to the REDLUX Academy community. Her single was meant for our September issue and now arrives here.
What's the story behind the music you're releasing right now? Where did it come from emotionally?
This song is an ode to this wonderful online music community I'm a member of, the one and only Redlux Academy, headed by the self-described "crazy" CEO Berlin. Without Berlin and her leadership, mentorship and support, and without this community, I'd be meandering aimlessly in the musical desert trying to figure out how to release music, how to write better songs and lack the motivation to release on a regular basis. In this powerful community we support each other's music and paths in getting ourselves out there, one step at a time. I was inspired to write "Crazy Train" as it so well describes every one of us following our soul's path, guided by Source, catching this "crazy" music train that whisks us down the tracks of our dreams, together.
Do you make music better alone or with other people in the room?
Right now, alone.
How do you know when a song is finished, and have you ever gone back and changed something you thought was done?
Yes. I really want to make sure the song is within professional standards across the board.
What do you do when creativity stops flowing? How do you get it back?
I meditate, or take a road trip.
What do you do outside of music that secretly makes your music better?
I am a visual artist, photography and hand crafted analog collage. I have dogs too, they are important for keeping one grounded in the present and maintaining silliness. I also hike, this is important for me to get grounded. Also as mentioned previously, taking a road trip, getting away from my home (where I create), helps immensely to metaphorically and literally expand my horizons.
What did your younger self think your music career would look like, versus what it actually looks like now?
Every minute, day, month and year that passes, I have become more and more of my artist self. I think being older and having a lot of life experience and wisdom has given me that freedom, but also there is a point where you just have to give yourself permission to be your artist self.
What's a part of your personality that shows up in every song whether you intend it to or not?
That I am an adventurer.
What's your message to another artist sitting on their music, too scared to release it?
Believe in and trust yourself. Go for it.
What do you listen to when you're not listening to music?
Self help/growth audio books.
"Danceable, melodic, and kinda goofy."
"My first song written on physical hardware, like building an autonomous band."
