A debut that took the long road through the studio: Ancient Justice would rather build a song with someone in the room, and they measure success in regular plays, not numbers.
What's the story behind the music you're releasing right now? Where did it come from emotionally?
Masquerade is a song about betrayal. But it's not a typical betrayal song, where you've been betrayed by a lover. It's more about being betrayed by the entire universe.
Do you make music better alone or with other people in the room?
I always like it better when I have someone I can bounce ideas off of. It's rare that I write a complete song by myself - I like incorporating others' ideas into my songs.
What's the song you wish you had written by someone else, and why?
There's probably a million I could name for a million different reasons but I'll go with Cenotaph by Ghost. It's a song about having someone who is no longer with us, but there's genuine joy in addition to sadness.
For those releasing for the first time: what took the longest, making the music, or getting the courage to put it out? For those releasing again, have you developed a template or process that makes the process easier?
This is our first release and the production process took forever. But we learned so much about the proper way to record and produce music that it should take much less time moving forward.
What does success look like to you, not in the industry's eyes, but in yours?
Success to me would be people regularly listening to a release. If our music gets regular plays by even a very small number of people, I'd call that success.
"I love writing and singing about love and affairs of the heart."
"I officially claim alternative/indie rock. Secretly, I am a blues/R&B man."
